How to Make a Foosball Table: Step-by-Step Instruction and Pictures

How to make a homemade foosball table

There can be several reasons to build a foosball table by yourself. First of all, the price of a good sturdy wooden table can be a bit too high if you are not a hard-core fan and only wish to play with your kids once in a while. Secondly, the real table requires good amount of space – not only by itself, but also because there are up to 4 people that are supposed to be able stand around it. If you live in apartment, this space is not easy to spare. And thirdly, it’s rather fun to have one, made all by yourself.

Let’s say you’d like to have a mini homemade foosball table and not to spend money on it. Believe it or not, but this is going to be really easy. Basically, you need to buy nothing, just collect some junk that might be easily found in almost any household:

How to make a foosball table out of wood
  • 4 wooden dowels or simply chopsticks;
  • a cardboard box, narrower than your dowels (shoebox will do);
  • sharpie;
  • utility knife, scissors;
  • ruler;
  • two colors of paint;
  • glue;
  • a big marble;
  • 10 pegs.

Now, let’s start:

1. You going to make four rows of “men” in your box, so you have to measure how far on the side the first row should be.

2. Make four “rods” out of your dowels – clip three pegs on two of them and two pegs on another two.

3. Place prepared row of pegs standing against the side of the box where the first row should be and mark the place 1 cm above the dowel heights. Make a hole in the marked place big enough for the dowel to spin easily in it.

4.
Make the same for three other rows. Pierce the matching holes on the other side of the box.

Careful! The holes should be precisely on the opposite sides, otherwise your rods will not be spinning properly

5. Cut the top part of your box if needed, in the end it should be only couple cm taller than the holes for the dowels.

6. Make the goals on both sides of the box.

7. Color the pegs and dowels in two team colors and let them dry.

8. Decorate your box. You can paint it as well or wrap it in colorful paper.

9. Now, place the dowels and attach the pegs on them – 2 pieces on the side sticks and three on the middle ones. If the pegs are not tight enough you might better use glue to make sure they do not move when you play

10. That’s it, you won’t see your kids until the evening!

This cheap design might seem primitive, but that just a blueprint. You can expand it and make the table from a big TV box – with the proper number of rows. You can use smooth plastic sticks for the rods to make them spin better. If you have good hands and plenty of time, do it from the scraps of wood. Use better materials, take more time – the possibilities are numerous. Get creative and have well-deserved fun as a reward.
